Valencia Martial Arts offers core curriculum in Kung Fu, specifically a descendant style of Kang Duk Kwon Tae Kwon Do incoporating elements of Wutang Mountain Kung Fu. In addition we offer our students the opportunity to study a variety of complimentary styles and techniques including Tai Shing Pek Kwar (Monkey Kung Fu), Shinkendo Japanese Swordsmanship, and Kali-Kenpo stick fighting. This unique approach to martial arts instruction stems from Master David Burgett's own interest in learning more about his own art's roots. Master Dave is as much as student as he is an instructor and he encourages this same kind of inquisitiveness in his students.
Master Dave began his formal martial arts training in the fall of 1985 while attending college at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Master Dave discovered the VA Tech Karate Club on campus soon after his arrival, and having harbored an interest in martial arts since his youth, joined immediately. After training at the karate club for about 6 months, he transferred to Dr. Ed Hampton’s Blacksburg School of Karate, where he continued to train until he graduated from college in May of 1990.
During much of the 90’s, Master Dave explored various martial art disciplines, both through private study as well as through attendance at various schools in the Los Angeles area. In May of 1998, he found Grandmaster Don Baird at the American School of Martial Arts in Burbank, CA. After watching one class and speaking with Grandmaster Baird, he knew that he had found a new martial arts home.
Studying Kung Fu diligently under Grandmaster Baird, Master Dave received a teacher's certification in October of 2002, was promoted to the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in December of 2003, was certified as a Master, and opened his own school in Valencia, CA in November of 2004.
